Chettinad
Antiques and Furniture |
Most
of the Chettinad houses consist of wood-carving in doors, gigantic
doorframes, stucco windows and railings which are rich in art
. All the furniture which are used by Chettiars will be very
valuable and elegant even after several years. They almost use
rich teak wood and rosewood for their buildings.Their doors
and windows will be carved well with some of the goddess in
order to signify their wealth.

They use huge copper water vats, grain bins trace, big bronze
pots, giant kooja’s and thooku(a vessel with lid). They
use all these antiques for all their functions in order to serve
food in big banquet hall so that they don’t get these
vessels for rent during any festival or functions. Most of them
will do their marriage at their big houses rather than in Kalyana
Mandabam(Marriage Hall). Nowadays Chettinad houses are converted
into Kalyana mandabam.
Karaikudi’s Muniswaran Kovil street has several antique
shops selling stuff from local home furnitures, lots of junk,
glass objects, glass with art works etc. Most of these buildings
remain intact. They have been well-maintained, with the antiques
still shining in all their glory way of life.
